In March, I gave myself a birthday gift: a ticket to Spain and a few days with paint on my hands.
It was a last minute decision, and no regrets.
I flew out to assist muralist Andrea Ehrhardt on a realistic leopard mural at Lydia’s Rural House, just outside Barcelona. The drive from the airport into the countryside was beautiful—open land, olive trees, and rolling hills that reminded me of Texas, just with a softer light.
It was my first time back in Spain since studying abroad in Granada, and being there again felt like a full-circle moment. Lydia, our host, welcomed us with warmth and generosity. We visited a Cava winery, explored cathedrals, stood at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, and painted in between it all.
The mural design itself wasn’t mine, but I still got to bring something to the table. With my spray paint experience, I was able to help the other artists learn how to incorporate spray into their own mural work. It felt good to contribute—to teach as much as I learned.
I’m especially passionate about supporting other women as they grow their creative businesses, and this small meetup of four women artists was the perfect size for real connection. The camaraderie, shared skills, and encouragement made the whole experience feel like a creative reset.
I’ll definitely be back.
Thank you Lydia for the hospitality!
